About the Book

First Page is a desktop publishing package with a range of tools. The package can create various document types: newspapers, newsletters, greetings cards, advertisements, flyers, posters, certificates, booklets, letterheads, brochures, menus, and tests and worksheets. Text can be laid out in single or multiple colums; enlarged to form a headline or reduced to form a caption; surrounded with borders; and can overlay or flow around illustrations. Text can also flow between columns. Text can be entered either by typing directly into First Page, which provides basic word processing facilities, or else by dragging and dropping in text files. PenDown and PenDown Plus files can also be dropped in, retaining their format and type styles. This makes First Page suitable as a desktop publishing companion for PenDown. First Page contains a set of built-in styles, which allows users to experiment with different typographical effects and format text quickly. Therefore, different groups of pupils working on a document can follow a shared and consistent text style. New styles can also be created, loaded and saved separately from other documents. Scanned images, sprites and draw files can be dragged and dropped into a First Page document, where they can be re-sized and laid out by dragging with the mouse. In addition, frames can have a graphic as a background, which allows for creative effects. Double clicking on a sprite or draw file in a document will automatically load it into the program that created it. After editing, illustrations can be saved directly into the First Page document, rather than on a separate disk. This ensures that layout is always preserved. First Page can display work in a scrolling mode (like a word processor); two up view, which provides a scrolling view of left and right pages; tiled view, which provides a thumbnail view of all pages; and a sideways view, which provides a scrolling view of all pages. Any documents created in First Page can be printed in full colour or black and white, using any RISC OS 3 printer driver. First Page is designed for the National Curriculum Key Stages 2-4 in English, and is suitable for the Scottish 5-14 curriculum, English language levels C-E and Standard Grade.
