About the Book

For plucky red-haired 12-year-old girl Paprika Pratt a mystery gift of a box of crayons opens a magic door to a series of breathtaking adventures in the far-away Valdavia, ruled by a cruel invader king. With her brothers - enterprising Mike, 10, and trusting Jonni, 8 - Paprika leads the Valdavians in a daring plan to place a handsome young forester on the throne. As the magic crayons help the children escape one tight spot after another, Paprika learns of a young red-haired princess long thought dead...

About the Author :
Virginia Hustvedt Hauck (1913-1989) was born in Decorah, Iowa, the home of her father's parents. Because her father was a naval officer she lived in many different places as she grew up, including two years on Oahu, Hawaii, the birth place and childhood home of her mother. Virginia was an imaginative child who enjoyed making up stories, drawing pictures, and writing poems, some of which were published in the children's magazine, St. Nicholas. She attended the Corcoran School of Art briefly before marrying naval officer Philip Hauck in 1937. They had three children. While Washington D. C. often served as a home base for the peripatetic family, Virginia eventually settled in Winchester, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston. As an adult she continued to write and paint. Betty Hauck is a former professional concert violist and founder of The Apple Hill Chamber Players in Nelson NH, where from 1971 through 1995 she was resident violist, touring nationally and internationally. She was also program book annotator and special programs speaker. Betty Hauck has publishing credits in music journals, is an advocate and educator for hearing loss and, as a motivational speaker, has presented "A Life in Music Lost and Found: My Journey as a Musician with Hearing Loss" at the 2019 HLAA Convention in Rochester NY and many other venues. Eric Hustvedt has been assisting book projects for many years. He established Talent Bank Communications in 1985 to offer a range of communications services. He has also been active as a communications consultant for the Nova Scotia boatbuilding sector and as a rural municipal councillor.
