About the Book

The moral theology of Hans G. Ulrich is presented here in English for the first time. These collected essays represent the culmination of a lifetime of reflection on Christian living from this German theologian in conversation with Luther, Bonhoeffer, and contemporary philosophers and theologians. Ulrich’s ethics affirm the lively presence of the living work of God in orienting the daily life of Christians.

This presence enables members of the Church to live as creatures trusting in God’s promises, bearing witness in political and economic spheres, and trusting in life as a gift in response to bioethical issues. Ulrich’s fresh take on living out of the promise of God yields further guidance on issues in international relations, economics, parenting, disability, and more.

Review :
These essays introduce one of the foremost theological ethicists of the past half century to an English-speaking audience that has much to learn from him. Ranging across many topics and disciplines, Ulrich's theology is an affirmation of the goodness of the human condition that begins by refusing to accept it on its own terms. After the trauma of German history during the twentieth century and the crisis that trauma initiated for Christian theology and ethics, a new generation of German thinkers set about rediscovering the proper foundation for theological ethics in God’s action in the midst of a fallen world. As the essays in this volume clearly demonstrate Hans Urlich’s participation in that project has borne rich fruit. Here is an approach to ethics that will be of enduring value precisely because it is founded, as theological ethics must always be, upon attentiveness to the presence and the work of God. We have waited a long time for a translation of Transfigured not Conformed. It has been well worth the wait. Ulrich has written a masterpiece in any language. The breadth and depth of his scholarship are impressive. Occasionally a must read appears in the academy. This is one of those occasions. The wonderfully crafted collection, itself the culmination of a lifetime of incisive engagements, gifts us with a beautifully interwoven system of thought that is not only timely and humane, but itself punctuates a timeful humanism, an account of the apocalypse of God in the humanity of the Word incarnated in the divinity of the world.
