About the Book

This book offers readers a comprehensive research companion to the study of modern theology, covering the major contexts, developmental trajectories, movements of thought, concerns, figures, and key texts which mark Christian theology from the Enlightenment to the present. Two main parts focus on, first, the contexts, trajectories, movements, and concerns of modern theology, and, second, the major theologians of the modern period. The list of contributors is diverse, ecumenical, and global, bringing together essays by leading scholars in the field. This is an indispensable resource for students and researchers alike.

About the Author :
Philip G. Ziegler is Chair in Christian Dogmatics at the University of Aberdeen, UK R. David Nelson is director of Baylor University Press, USA

Review :
Ziegler and Nelson have completed a gigantic task by publishing this magnificent volume. They have entrusted to excellent scholars no less than 54 themes and 88 key figures of modern theology, which makes this volume the comprehensive work all students of modern theology must turn to. The themes vary from the roots of modern theology in the early modern reformations via philosophical backgrounds to various regional and confessional emphases. The key figures include the obvious 19th century philosophers and theologians as well as an impressive selection of theologians from the 20th and 21st centuries, reflecting the movement from theology as a largely European affair to a global endeavour. This volume presents a rich diversity of discussions and of conversation partners, which sets the standard as an overview for the years to come. The bibliographies at the end of chapters make this volume an excellent entryway for further study. While even a massive volume such as this cannot discuss each and every voice in modern theology, I am impressed by the scope and depth of what Ziegler and Nelson offer. With its broad coverage of problems, themes, and contexts, this volume admirably captures the diversity within modern Christian theology. Reflecting upon leading thinkers and trends, the editors have assembled a collection of unrivalled scope. This promises to be an invaluable resource.
