About the Book

This is a hands-on introduction to modeling a wide variety of applications in Microsoft Excel. It features numerous tutorials and applications to illustrate how to model and solve problems in Excel. It can be used by itself or as a supplement to a text in Mathematical Modeling or Liberal Arts Mathematics. Neuwirth and Arganbright offer a more accessible and hands-on alternative than do other modeling texts.

Table of Contents:
Prologue. Preface. 1. Introductory Models. Fibonacci Numbers. Growth Models. Extended Growth Models. Comparing Different Growth Models. 2. Dynamical Models and Difference Equations. Simple Epidemics. Harvesting Models. Population Dynamics. A Predator-Prey Model. Iterated Maps and Functions. More about Iterated Functions. The Feigenbaum Diagram. Sierpinski"s Triangle. 3. Physics Applications. Simple Projectile Motion. Projectile Motion with Air Resistance. Planetary Orbits: Half Step Method. The Shape of the Moon"s Orbit. Heat Propagation. 4. Number Theory. Numbers in Different Bases. Decimal Expansions. Greatest Common Divisor. Sieve of Eratosthenes. 5. Functions and Graphing. Graphing I: Basic Techniques. Graphing II: Polar and Parametric Equations. Bezier Curves. Bisection Algorithm. The Newton and Secant Methods. Fitting a Curve to Data. The Binomial Coefficients. 6. Creative Mathematics in Everyday Settings. A Bicycle Investigation. Ski Racing. The Golden Ratio. Paper Formats. Game of Life. Problems to Solve by Yourself. 7. Combinatorics and Probability. Birthday Problem. Birth Control: The Geometric Distribution. Genetics: The Hardy-Weinberg Principle. Simulation. 8. Finding Optimal Solutions. Optimal Bridge Location. Apportionment Algorithms. Medicine Dosage. Inventory Control. Game Theory. Appendices: 1. Spreadsheet Basics and Book Conventions. 2. Functions and Additional Spreadsheet Features. 3. Spreadsheet Graphing Fundamentals. 4. Additional Spreadsheet Graphing Techniques. 5. Interactive Spreadsheet Tools. 6. Reformatting Models for User Interaction. 7. Adding Interactive Tools to Excel Models.

About the Author :
Erich Neuwirth is a professor of mathematics and statistics at the University of Vienna. He has authored numerous contributed papers on the subject of using spreadsheets to help visualize structures. He maintains a wealth of valuable resources on this subject at http://sunsite.univie.ac.at/spreadsite/ Deane Arganbright is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Tennessee at Martin. Previously, he taught at Iowa State University, Whitworth College, and the University of Papua New Guinea. He has also authored MATHEMATICAL APPLICATIONS OF ELECTRONIC SPREADSHEETS, and PRACTICAL HANDBOOK OF SPREADSHEET CURVES AND GEOMETRIC CONSTRUCTIONS.
