About the Book

This practical, hands-on text demonstrates how teachers can put the power of Microsoft Works to use in an educational setting. In Microsoft Works for Educators on the Macintosh, Beaver draws on his ten years' experience of introducing educators to technology as a productivity enhancing tool. Students are taken from basic instruction (starting the computer) to preparing and integrating word processing, databases, spreadsheets, charting, communicating, and data integration. This combined tutorial, activities manual, and reference book may be used as a stand-alone text, as a reference book or in conjunction with other texts. It is also appropriate for a laboratory setting. Each of the applied chapters opens with a scenario portraying the potential power of works in an educational setting. This is followed by a section on using the Microsoft Works application in an educational setting, an explanation of important terminology, and a discussion of the conceptual framework for mastering applications. The remaining portion of each chapter has activities designed to encourage proficiency in applications. These detailed, hands-on exercises introduce readers to the power of Microsoft Works in the classroom. A series of strategies for integrating Microsoft Works skills concludes each chapter. Since it is often time consuming for instructors to write sample programs or files, a data disk with Works files is included free with each text. Students benefit from the data disk by having a template they can modify to their needs. As they gain experience using the data disk, they build the needed confidence to write their own documents and programs. This book should be of interest to instructors of educational computing; undergraduates of pre-service elementary education, secondary, education, computer science, data processing, education and human development; instructors of educational computing, computing, teacher education; computer based technologies in teacher education.
