About the Book

The first playbook for startups attempting to conquer highly-regulated sectors like energy, education, and healthcare, offering a practical toolkit for understanding and working with government regulators. Regulatory Hacking is the definitive playbook for the next wave of startups tackling complex challenges. To win in this next wave, startups must embrace the thorny, entrenched challenges of innovation in highly regulated industries, and learn how to work with government. Evan Burfield, cofounder of 1776, a DC-based VC firm and incubator, has helped startups around the world navigate the complicated landscape of government regulations. Now, he shows startups how to tackle challenges that require a new toolkit, including techniques like- - Power Mapping- How to gauge and engage with the power dynamics of your specific industry landscape. - Grassroots Activation- How to deploy a committed user base to help your cause with local government, as Airbnb did in several cities. - Coalition Building- How to build a coalition of strategic partners to amplify your startup's voice and help your company win. - Public Relations- How to develop a citizen-focused narrative that helps your startup win hearts and minds. Drawing on a wide range of startup case studies, from the kids' chauffeur service HopSkipDrive to the energy startup Opower, Regulatory Hacking gives you the tools you need to win the next frontier of innovation.

Review :
“A groundbreaking book and an immensely important addition to the entrepreneur’s reading list.”
—STEVE BLANK, author of The Startup Owner’s Manual

“Evan Burfield’s book is required reading for anyone who wants to succeed in the Third Wave of the internet economy, where startups will disrupt massive industries and the policy framework that shapes them.”
—STEVE CASE, chairman and CEO of Revolution LLC, cofounder of AOL, author of The Third Wave

“Large corporations can throw their weight behind laws and regulations that favor them. What can startups do? Thankfully, Evan Burfield has some answers.”
—BETH COMSTOCK, former vice chair of GE

“Evan Burfield explains why Silicon Valley’s distaste for government and government-regulated markets is misguided. Bringing these markets into the twenty-first century can have enormous positive impact on people’s lives—and provides the next great opportunity.”
—TIM O'REILLY, founder of O’Reilly Media, author of WTF?: What’s the Future and Why It’s Up to Us

“I’ve seen too many startups fail because they aren’t prepared to deal with regulation, while just a few succeed by finding ways to collaborate with government. Here, finally, is the book that gives entrepreneurs the knowledge, tools, and inspiration they need to navigate the messy world of regulation.”
—JONATHAN ORTMANS, president of Global Entrepreneurship Network

A Thrilling But Totally Believable Murder Mystery

Read this in one evening. I had planned to do other things with my day, but it was impossible to put down. Every time I tried, I was drawn back to it in less than 5 minutes. I sobbed my eyes out the entire last 100 pages. Highly recommend!
