About the Book

The world Methodist community now numbers over 75 million people in more than 130 countries. The story of Methodism is fascinating and multi-faceted because there are so many distinct traditions within it, some stemming directly from Britain and some arising in the United States. In this book, the authors address the issue of what holds all Methodists together and examine the strengths and diversity of an influential major form of Christian life and witness. They look at the ways in which Methodism has become established throughout the world, examining historical and theological developments, and patterns of worship and spirituality, in their various cultural contexts. The book reflects both the lasting contributions of John and Charles Wesley, and the on-going contribution of Methodism to the ecumenical movement and inter-religious relations. It offers both analysis and abundant resources for further study.

Table of Contents:
1. The beginning of world Methodism: John Wesley and his movement; 2. The British Methodist tradition after John Wesley; 3. Methodist in North America; 4. World Methodism at the beginning of the twenty-first century; 5. Methodist theology; 6. The common life of Methodism; 7. Methodist spirituality; 8. Methodist worship; 9. Methodist social ethics; 10. Methodism's ecumenical and interfaith commitments.

Review :
'This book is a comprehensive introduction to the history, theology, sociology, belief and practice of Methodism.' Publishing News '... a splendid contribution ... an impressive blend of comprehensiveness and depth. ... This illuminating and accessible study serves its purpose admirably, but would also enrich the understanding of those already familiar with Methodism.' Methodist Recorder 'This is an engaging narrative, scholarly (with a light touch), and holistic.' Church Times '... it is written in an interesting and lively way with fascinating illustrations of Methodist thought and experience across the years. It deserves to be widely read inside and outside the denomination.' ANVIL 'This book is beautifully and passionately written with a wealth of quotation from hymns, sermons and other Methodist sources. it can especially be commended to colleagues of other traditions seeking to understand what Methodism is.' Epworth Review 'This important and useful book should be found in the libraries of all who would count themselves as scholars of Methodism. With the great range of topics covered, and the authority with which Cracknell and White address their topic, this is a worthy addition to the Cambridge University Press series of introductions to World religious traditions.' Reviews in Religion and Theology 'This is an impressive study, supported by an excellent bibliography.' Theology
