About the Book

Measurement in Fluid Mechanics is an ideal reference and textbook in experimental fluid mechanics for anyone wishing to understand the properties of fluid-containing systems, to design improved systems, to predict the operation of such fluid systems, and to monitor and control physical processes. This single-authored book provides a consistent description of most available measurement methods, with the necessary background material required to understand these methods. It contains classical and state-of-the-art methods for flow visualization and for measuring flow rate, pressure, velocity, temperature, concentration and wall shear stress. While practising engineers will find the book useful, it is ideal as a graduate textbook, with plenty of illustrations, an extensive bibliography and suggested homework problems. Measurement in Fluid Mechanics contains extensive background material in system response, measurement uncertainty, signal analysis, optics, fluid mechanical apparatus and laboratory practices, with the objective to shield the reader from having to consult additional primary references.

Table of Contents:
Part I. General Concepts: 1. Flow properties and basic principles; 2. Measuring systems; 3. Measurement uncertainty; 4. Signal conditioning, discretization, and analysis; 5. Background for optical experimentation; 6. Fluid mechanical apparatus; 7. Towards a sound experiment; Part II. Measurement Techniques: 8. Measurement of flow pressure; 9. Measurement of flow rate; 10. Flow visualization techniques; 11. Measurement of local flow velocity; 12. Measurement of temperature; 13. Measurement of composition; 14. Measurement of wall shear stress; 15. Outlook.

About the Author :
Professor Stavros Tavoularis has been a member of the faculty in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ottawa since 1980. He has also been the Director of the Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. His research interests include turbulence structure, turbulent diffusion, vortical flows, aerodynamics, biofluid dynamics, nuclear reactor thermal hydraulics and the development of experimental methods. Professor Tavoularis is an elected Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada and of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering and a recipient of the George S. Glinski Award for Excellence in Research.

Review :
'... well presented ... well produced ... an excellent additional reference text for any fluid flow laboratory. ... sufficient information and detail in the book to enable the reader to get a fundamental understanding of the principles underwriting the technology, if he requires ...' Journal of Process Mechanical Engineering 'This book steers well between the essentially trivial and the excessively mathematical - balancing between description, illustration, reference and mathematics in a careful and consistent way. I would recommend this book if an introduction to flow measurement is what you are looking for - it is illustrative, interesting and well written.' Measurement + Control
