About the Author :
Rosaly Lopes is an expert in planetary volcanism at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, where she studies volcanism on Earth, as well as other planets and moons. Using data returned by the Galileo spacecraft, Dr Lopes was responsible for the discovery of 71 previously unknown volcanoes on Jupiter's moon Io. She currently works on the Cassini mission, which is making observations of Saturn and its moons.

Review :
'Rosaly Lopes provides the practical details needed for adventurous tourists to safely explore some of the most famous volcanoes in North America and Europe. She enthusiastically guides the reader to her favorite volcanoes, describing not only trails and past eruptions, but also photography tips and her own experiences. With its evocative color photos and clear maps, The Volcano Adventure Guide made me want to lace up my hiking shoes and follow in her footsteps.' Charles Wood (previously the Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor of Space Studies at the University of North Dakota) and the founder of the VolcanoWorld website 'Dr Lopes brings the reader into an intimate encounter with one of the most powerful and destructive forces on our planet, the active volcano. Her easy writing style takes us from the molten core of the Earth to the spewing lava flows and deadly eruptions of the past and present. Each page is full of personal knowledge and observations, along with excellent tips on how to survive being around one of these lethal beasts. This is a must-read book for anyone interested in the awesome forces of nature and off-the-beaten-trail adventures.' Ralph White, Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and The Explorers Club, National Geographic cameraman, and past-president of The Adventurers' Club 'This beautifully illustrated book is a good rough guide to nature's rough stuff. Read the eight rules for visiting volcanoes and the five rules for surviving eruptions ('watch out for steam and methane explosions'), then choose your volcano ... Her book visits at least 25 volcanoes ... and supplies practical advice and eye-popping stories about every one.' The Guardian 'In The Volcano Adventure Guide, we now have the ultimate tourist volume to lead us safely to many of the world's famous volcanoes and to ensure that we will see the important sites at each one. ... Beautiful colour photographs of erupting volcanoes, hot springs, and volcanic deposits are generously sprinkled throughout ... a superb gift to professionals and nonprofessionals who have an interest in volcanoes.' EOS 'Rosaly Lopes' book gives advice on planning a visit to an active volcano, and has detailed guides to 42 of the world's most spectacular examples. With chapters on the types of eruption as well as safety and survival rules, this is another book that should interest those staying at home as well as amateur and professional volcanologists alike.' Nature 'The Volcano Adventure Guide is different - a genuine first in the field, to be warmly welcomed. ... It deserves to be a huge success ...'. Times Higher Education Supplement 'For those still looking for something more edgy than a couple of weeks of hot sun by a pool, this offers a good starting point, with a comprehensive guide to giant exploding mountains and sources of molten rock all over the planet.' Focus 'Anyone interested in touring volcanoes should consider Rosaly Lopes' The Volcano Adventure Guide as the best primer.' Ultra Travel 'Lopes has many exciting and instructive personal stories that bring home the risks of visiting volcanoes. Besides being densely informative, most of the book is remarkably well written. It deserves to be a huge success, with regular editions, which, one hopes, may include a few Asian volcanoes. I shall certainly take it with me next time I visit Etna.' Times Higher Education Supplement '... the work is essentially aimed at the discerning, prudent traveller, the amateur geologist, or entry-level student and for such, very good advice is given; really a sort of Travel Guide to Volcanoes. The book is beautifully produced with superb pictures to whet one's appetite and, at GBP30 represents very good value.' Geological Society 'The book is beautifully illustrated with spectacular photographs and there are clear maps and diagrams. At GBP30.00 it is extremely good value and a 'must have' for anyone who is fascinated by volcanoes. Even if you do not have the opportunity to visit any of the places described this book is a joy to read - but I can guarantee that you will be inspired to set off your own volcano adventure.' Open University Geological Society Journal 'This book is aimed at the non-specialist who wishes to explore volcanoes and take part in the new adventure sport of observing eruptions, but it will also fascinate amateur enthusiasts and professionals, so any library will find it a useful book to have on their shelves.' Reference Reviews 'The Volcano Adventure Guide is the first book of its type. It introduces the readers to the wonderful world of volcanoes and helps them visit, explore, photograph, and above all, appreciate volcanoes both in eruption and in repose ... the book takes the reader from the molten core of the earth to the spewing lava flows and deadly eruptions of the past and present. It will fascinate amateur enthusiasts and professional volcanologists alike ...' Environmental Geologist '... filled with practical hints.' www.ralphmag.org
