About the Book

This volume documents the history of the doctrine of justification from the Reformation to the present day. Particular attention is paid to Luther, and Lutherian and Reformed concepts are considered and points of contact and dissimilarity are noted. New light is thrown on schools of thought represented at the Council of Trent, and its teaching is considered in detail. The opinions of the English Reformers are elucidated and compared with their continental counterparts; and the development of the doctrine within Anglicanism is studied with particular reference to the Caroline Divines and John Henry Newman. Modern development since the Enlightenment is considered with particular reference to Kant, Schleiermacher and Barth. In questioning many of the presuppositions about the development of the doctrine, this study makes a significant contribution to the modern ecumenical movement.

Table of Contents:
Preface; 6. The development of the doctrine in the Reformation period; 7. The Tridentine decree on justification; 8. The legacy of the English Reformation; 9. The modern period.

Review :
'No seminary, divinity school or graduate research library should be without this contribution to scholarly interpretation of the historical and theological aspects of the doctrine of justification … its analysis are consistently precise, carefully attentive to detail and nuance, and its conclusions both circumspect and challenging.' Religious Studies 'A first class, scholarly, authoritative, balanced, informed study … unique value as an historical and theological analysis.' Scottish Journal of Theology 'An admirable work … an invaluable source and should be recognised as a standard work on the subject'. Heythrop Journal 'An impressive study ... it will undoubtedly be consulted by students of the doctrine of justification for a long time to come.' Journal of Theological Studies
