About the Book

This is a reference work and digest on more than a century of scholarly work on troubadour poetry. The book summarizes the current consensus on the various facets of troubadour studies and provides a list of troubadour editions, with each chapter including a list of additional readings. Standing at the beginning of the history of modern European verse, the troubadours were the prime poets and composers of the 12th and 13th centuries in the South of France. The courtly love celebrated in the elaborately rhymed stanzas of troubadour verse was imitated by poets and musicians all over medieval Europe. All quotations in the book are given in the original Old Occitan and in English.
