Excerpt from Die Behandlung des Urspr. Auslautenden Ai im Gotischen, Althochdeutschen und Altsächsischen Es handelt sich hier vorzugsweise um den dativ sing. Der masc. (u. Neutr.) a-stämme und der fern. Ö-stämme. Diese formen sind die beiden letzten jahrzehnte hindurch wiederholt erörtert, aber noch immer stehen die verschiedensten ansichten einander gegenüber Mir scheint keine der bisherigen dar stellungen ganz das richtige getroffen zu haben, wenn auch die einen in diesem, die andern in jenem punkte der richtigen lösung nahe gekommen sind. Eine eingehende kritik aller bisherigen deutungen beabsichtige ich hier nicht zu geben. Ich kann darauf um so eher verzichten, als erst kürzlich die arische form des dativs der o-stämme genauer festgestellt und damit die grundlage der erklärung allen früheren untersuchungen gegenuber eine andre geworden ist. Nur der unten am schlusse der anmerkung erwähnte aufsatz J. Schmidt's ist von den arischen auslautsgesetzen und den europäischen sprachen aus zu ähnlichen aufstellungen gelangt wie sie die neugefundenen vedischen dativformen an die hand geben. Ich teile den stand punkt Schmidt's insofern, als auch ich für die masculina und neutra wie für die feminina eine doppelte dativform annehme. Aber Schmidt hat damit den standpunkt zu vereinigen gesucht, welcher in dem german. Dativ der a-stämme einen locativ sieht und urspr. -ai im Ahd. Und As. Durch -e vertreten sein lässt. So wenig wie diese ansichten scheint mir Schmidt's erklärung des dativs der masculina u. Neutra im einzelnen haltbar. Um die hier schwebenden fragen klarzulegen muss ich auf die vor geschichte der german. Formen näher eingehen.
