About the Book

Penguins Don't Send Postcards is the story of a tawaki, a Fiordland crested penguin who was injured at sea and drifted north on ocean currents until he washed ashore on Ninety Mile Beach. His road to recovery was by land and air. There were many helping hands along the way. This is a story of endurance, adaption and survival. It is a story that will appeal to all ages and stages.  It is an excellent classroom resource for all ages with plenty of opportunity to extend the learning with discussion, art and investigation into threatened species and the natural world of Aotearoa New Zealand. The text is has many interesting facts about the tawaki and the vibrant illustrations bring the character of this quirky creature to life on the page.

About the Author :
Jeanette Goode completed a Diploma in Children's Literature in 2014 but she waited until she reached retirement to publish her first book A Little Blue in 2020.  Penguins Don't Send Postcards, this is her second book featuring penguins.  When a Tawaki, a Fiordland crested penguin, one of the rarest penguins in the world arrived at the Westport Wildlife Rescue on the West Coast for rehabilitation Jeanette was lucky to be able to observe this bird as he recovered from his injuries. It was a rare privilege and an experience Jeanette wanted to share with the world. Jeanette  has lived on the West Coast of the South Island for twenty two years and has had many close encounters with penguins. Based on these experiences she has crafted stories that are deeply connected to the environment and the natural world that she lives in. Jeanette has a strong belief that children should be able to access stories about their own familiar landscapes and see themselves in the stories they read. It was important to Jeanette that she illustrate her own stories as the illustrations needed to convey a deeper story and that deeper story was about the  Natural world of the West Coast, Te Tai Poutini.

Review :
Jack is a Fiordland Crested penguin who lives on the west Coast of New Zealand. It is shameful that many humans in decision making positions still think that we humans are the only creature that matters on this planet but fortunately for a wounded and threatened Jack, he meets some humans who are not of that ilk. This almost true story has Jack rescued, nurtured back to health and set free again rather reluctantly because Jack has become attached to his human friends but alas must fend for himself again. The humans will miss him but penguins don’t send postcards. A delightful story written in easy text and beautifully illustrated. For junior readers essentially but heavens this story is for everybody and was the power to change opinions. Bob Docherty
