About the Book

New Zealand’s infrastructure was built by the people of the construction industry; either in the public sector funded by government, or in companies founded by families. Both sectors had an innate strength, it was built on personalities and in the private sector this was generally that of the company’s founder, however large or small the company. This strength was difficult to define but could be encapsulated in words like `reputation’, `loyalty’, `integrity’ and `family,’ and although disputed in practice, these values were the basis of business practice in construction. As management – especially in companies that were growing larger began to transition to private corporate business, it soon became apparent how difficult it was to translate the values that had once been the backbone of the industry, into the formalised language and practice of law and corporate structure. One of the last of New Zealand’s large family-owned construction companies was sold by the founding family to the international company Vinci in 2015. This is story of the people who made up the company HEB, the works they created, and how for forty years these people and their business were so successful.
