About the Book

Campbell has now carried out her wish with this striking and unusual collection of love poems, mainly from the exacting early and middle years of their marriage. Tested by mental illness, infidelity, doubt, and independence, their love remained strong to the end. Campbell has matched the love poems, his and hers, which appear on facing pages throughout the book. The result is never less than cogent and illuminating. If you like poems that are frank, direct and passionate, this is the book for you.

About the Author :
Alistair Te Ariki Campbell was born in Rarotonga in 1925, and he is half Cook Islands Maori and half Dunedin Scot. A prolific author, he has published four novels, a number of radio plays, a stage play, and 17 collections of poems, including Just Poetry, which appeared in 2007. His many awards, including the Pacific Islands Artist’s Award and an Hon DLitt (Victoria University), culminated in an ONZM in the New Year Honours, 2005, and the Prime Minister’s Award for Literary Achievement in Poetry, also in 2005. Campbell died in 2009. Meg Campbell was born in Palmerston North in 1937. She was educated at Marsden School and Victoria University. She had a very promising acting career, which was cut short in 1957 when she met and fell in love with the poet Alistair Te Ariki Campbell. She and Alistair lived together in Pukerua Bay for 47 years. Meg published six collections of poetry, beginning with The Way Back, which won the PEN Award for the Best First Book of Poetry in 1982. Her final book, Poems Adrift, came out on 17 November 2007, a day after she died at home, and two days before her 70th birthday.

Review :
More than one commentator has called Meg and Alistair Campbell the Brownings of New Zealand literature. And why not? What other New Zealand writing couple comes close? And while the Browning’s union lasted a mere 15 years (until Elizabeth’s untimely death), the Campbell’s relationship lasted half a century… . The couple’s enduring love is evident in these poems. – Joy Mackenzie, from the Introduction
