About the Book

This work on intercellular communication is based on the 25 papers presented at the third USSR Workshop on the subject, held in 1988 in Lithuania (the workshops are held every four years). Among the topics covered in the first section, on mechanisms and functions, are interactions through permeable cell-to-cell junctions in cultivated mammalian cells; energetics of local cell-to-cell interactions in phototrophic organisms; and the mechanisms of initial cell reactions at cellular interactions in the syngenic and allogenic systems. In the second section on cell-to-cell coupling, some topics addressed are the inhibition of intercellular communication and tumour promoting screening; the role of the structural lability of membranes in the regulation of intercellular communications and energetic functions of permeable intercellular junctions. In the third and fourth sections, material on the mechanisms of cell fusions and cell-to-cell coupling of the heart are covered.

Table of Contents:
Simulation of passive electric properties in the two - and three - dimensional anisotropic syncitial medium, F.Bukauskas et al; the possible role of synthetic polycations in myoblast fusion stimulated by them, V.G.Ritter et al; energetic functions of permeable intercellular junctions, T.V.Potapova; intercellular communication and alpha-ferroprotein synthesis in adult hepatocyte culture, Yu Yu Sharovskaya et al; inhibition of intercellular communication and tumour promoter screening, I.V.Budunova and L.A.Mittelman; fusion of muscular cells - ultrastructure and mechanisms, V.S.Orlov et al; factors related to the propagation of the cardiac impulse, ephatic impulse transmission and curved wavefront excitation, M.Suenson; cell-to-cell interaction and long-term potentiation in the hippocampus, L.I.Voronin et al; cell adhesion in epidermis - theoretical and practical aspects, A.G.Kelikiants et al; junctional and non-junctional membrane conductances in mouse hepatocytes, I.M.Plonsky et al; the role of structural lability of membrances in the regulation of intercellular communciations, V.M.Mazhul et al; characteristics of gap junctions between endothelial cells, A.Brakhramov et al; ion interactions through permeable cell-to-cell junctions in the cultivated mammalian cells, K.B.Aslanidi and I.J.Boisova; the asymmetrical electroporation of the cells, G.Saulis and H.S.Vanslauskas; on the mechanism of initial cell reactions and cellular interactions in the syngenic and allogenic systems, K.I.Pukho and Y.I.Pukhova; electrical breakdown of human red blood cells and resealing of pores, G.Saulis et al; energetics of local cell-to-cell interactions in phototrophic organisms, K.B.Aslanidi and A.A.Shalapjenok; electron-microscopical study of synapse electricity of the parallel fibres on frog purkinje cells, N.P.Larionova et al; on the control of cell aggregation patterns in early loach embryos by opiate-like cell surface receptors, A.E.Kalyuzhny and V.G.Cherdantcev.
