About the Book

The multiplexer can be considered as one of the most important types of communications products developed during this century. Originally designed as a mechanism to reduce the cost of communications by the application of frequency division, both the method of operation and functions performed by multiplexers have significantly changed. Through the use of microprocessor technology, a high degree of intelligence has been incorporated into many multiplexing products. This in turn resulted in the multiplexer evolving into a key netowrking component used by most commercial organizations, government agencies, and public and private universities. Today, multiplexers form the basis for developing intelligent netowrks, integrating voice and data onto common high-speed transmission lines, providing access to multiple computers via a common network, among other functions. As we move into the next century multiplexers can be expected to continue their leading role in providing users with the capability to develop intelligent networks. Although we can expect additional features, functions and capabilities to be added to this communications device, their primary function to provide an economical method to interconnect data sources at dispersed locations will continue to provide the primary fartionale for using multiplexers. In this book the author has attempted to place into one volume comprehensive information concerning the different types of multiplexers network analysts, designers, operators, and practitioners can consider; how they operate, their features, and most important, numerous examples of netowrk applicaitons involving the use of multiplexers. From reading this book, both lay and experienced network personnel should obtain an additional insi8ght into the operation and utilization of different types of multiplexers.
