About the Book

This definitive textbook and reference guide to the arthropod brain is arranged logically in three sections. Section I, on evolution, includes a discussion on the presence of a fourth component, tetrocerebrum, in the insect brain in addition to the three commonly recognized parts, and the evolutionary trends in the central and mushroom bodies in major arthropod groups. A section on structure and function includes detailed ultrastructural studies of the brain as well as studies of the mechanoreceptory centers, peripheral sensory coding and sensilla function, and antennal information processing. Also examined are biochemical topics such as bioamines and mucosubstances, their respective roles in brain function, and various techniques of brain research.

Table of Contents:
EVOLUTION AND DEVELOPMENT: Evolution of the Insect Brain, with Special Reference to the So-called Tritocerebrum; Evolutionary Trends in the Central and Mushroom Bodies of the Arthropod Brain: A Dilemma; The Cellular Mechanisms that Shape Neuronal Diversity and Form: Insights from the Embryonic Grasshopper; STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION: The Brain of the Horseshoe Crab Limulus Polyphemus; Histology and Ultrastructure of the Acarine Synganglion; Comparative Anatomy of the Crustacean Brain; Histology and Ultrastructure of the Myriapod Brain; Histology and Ultrastructure of the Onychophoran Brain; Organization of the First Optic Neuropil (or Lamina) in Different Insect Species; Comparative Aspects of the Retinal Mosaics of Jumping Spiders; Index.
