About the Book

Resource Reservation Setup Protocol (RSVP) is the Internet protocol being developed so that the Internet can deliver quality of service (QoS), prioritising data and reserving it, if necessary, to meet a schedule. Now, from the author team that developed the RSVP PC implementation adopted by Microsoft for Windows NT and Windows, comes this book, which demystifies RSVP and the Internet Services model for QoS. Providing readers with a detailed description of the RSVP protocol now that it is ready for mainstream use, it looks at the application programme interface (API) crucial for application developers, and shows IT managers and service providers how they can best deploy the technology.

Table of Contents:
MOTIVATION AND BACKGROUND; Motivation for Quality of Service; Overview of Internet Technologies; Internet Multicasting; QoS IN THE INTERNET; The Internet with Quality of Service: A Conceptual Overview; Fundamentals of the Resource Reservation Protocol; Advanced Concepts in RSVP; Traffic Control; QoS APPLICATIONS AND DEPLOYMENT; Odds and Ends Differentiated Services and the Last Mile Problem; Policy Control and Monitoring for RSVP; QoS-Aware Applications; Bibliography; Glossary.

About the Author :
David Durham is a software engineer at Intel, where he has been working on the development of the RSVP protocol to support QoS. He is also a member of the IETF Working Group developing the final specifications for RSVP. Raj Yavatkar, Phd, is the Director of Internet Infrastructure at Intel's Communications Architecture Laboratory, where he led the development of RSVP and the QoS implementations for the next generation of Microsoft operating systems. He also authored and led the IETF specification of Subnet Bandwidth Manager for mapping RSVP and Integrated Services on LANs.
