About the Book

The rising number of incidences of melanoma has led to increased interest in the disease from diagnostic, management, and basic science perspectives. The Melanocytic Proliferation describes the pathobiology of pigmented melanocytic lesions, and provides guidelines for their diagnosis and management as they affect the skin and mucosas. Extensively illustrated, this book is divided into four parts: the biology of melanocytes and malignant melanoma; nonmelanocytic lesions (e.g., lentigo, congenital nevi, compound nevi); melanocytic lesions with the potential to develop as melanoma (e.g., dysplastic nevi); and malignant melanoma (e.g., radial and vertical growth phases). Offering extensive discussions of each lesion, The Melanocytic Proliferation covers clinical applications, histology, differential diagnostic features, diagnostic algorithms, immunohistochemistry, electromicroscopy, and, where applicable, treatment, prognosis, and adjuvant therapy. The Melanocytic Proliferation is an excellent and indispensable resource for dermatologists, pathologists, dermapathologists, and surgical pathologists.

Table of Contents:
Introduction.; An Approach to the Clinical Diagnosis of Malignant Melanoma, Its Precursors, and Its Clinical Mimics.; The Freckles and Lentigines; The Nondysplastic Acquired Nevi: Common Acquired Nevus and Other Benign Acquired Nevi.; The Dermal Dendritic Melanocytic Proliferations/Dermal Melanocytosis; Spitz Nevus; Combined Nevus, Deep-Penetrating Nevus, and Plexiform Spindle Cell Nevus.; Recurrent Melanocytic Nevus.; The Congenital Nevus.; The Dysplastic Melanocytic Nevus, De Novo Intraepidermal Epithelioid and Lentiginous Melanocytic Dysplasia, and Nevi at Specific Anatomic Sites.; Malignant Melanoma; Conjunctival Melanocytic Proliferations.; The Use of Adjunctive Immunoperoxidase, Molecular, and Ultrastructural Studies in the Diagnosis of Melanocytic Proliferations.; The Biology of Malignant Melanoma.; Approach to the Reporting of Equivocal/Borderline Nevomelanocytic Lesions: The Severely Atypical Dermoepidermal Nevomelanocytic Proliferation as a Transition Step in Lesional Progression to Malignant Melanoma; The Therapy of Malignant Melanoma; Appendix I: The TNM Staging Classification for Malignant Melanoma.; Appendix II: The Synoptic Report for Primary Cutaneous Malignant Melanoma; Index.

Review :
"...an incredibly relevant clinical-histopathologic text...useful for both pathologists and clinicians... The authors are correct in describing the book as a 'single integrated sourcebook.'" (Doody's, March 25, 2002) "an extremely helpful guide for the practicing dermatopathologist or general pathologist as an example of how to handle difficult cases" (Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Vol. 126, August 2002) "...well-written and entertaining...will be a valuable reference..." (Modern Pathology, Vol. 15, No. 5, 2002) "A fine text...good photography and special emphasis on new developments, treatments, and diagnostic techniques." (Journal of the American Association of Forensic Dentists, Volume 10-12, 2002)
