About the Book

This second edition of Phaselock Techniques is ---- as was the first ---- the standard reference on the subject. Greatly expanded and largely rewritten to reflect a better understanding of the subject, the book presents much new material, some published here for the first time. Explanation of fundamentals is improved and expanded, and description of applications is greatly increased. The first portion of the book is a well--organized review of the fundamentals of phaselock, as well as a discussion of the underlying problems faced by designers. Most of this mateiral has been rewritten from the first edition. The material that follows deals with practical aspects of component circuits and with rational procedures for deciding upon phaselock loop parameters. The remaining chapters provide engineering descriptions and analyses of applications of phaselock. Most of this material is unique.Included are discussions of phaselocked modulators and demodulators, sythesizers, receivers, transponders, oscillator stabilizers, and data synchronizers.

Table of Contents:
Loop Fundamentals. Noise Performance. Tracking. Acquisition. Loop Components. Optimization of Loop Performance. Phaselock Receivers and Transponders. Phaselocked Modulators and Demodulators. Locked Oscillators and Synthesizers. Data Synchronizers. Appendices. Index.

About the Author :
About the author FLOYD M. GARDNER has been working with phaselock loops since 1955. He has engaged in basic phaselock research, in circuit design, in debugging of phaselock hardware, and in the teaching of phaselock courses. He brings long experience to the writing of this second edition of Phaselock Techniques. Dr. Gardner has been an independent consulting engineer since 1960. In this time he spent 1 1/2 years consulting abroad by invitation of AEG--Telefunken in Germany and the European Space Agency in the Netherlands. Besides phaselock, he has been involved in such diverse topics as digital communications (especially synchronization), telemetry, electronic tracking and navigation systems, and design of radio receivers. He received his education at Illinois Institute of Technology (BSEE 1950), Stanford University (MSEE 1951), and University of Illinois (PhD 1953). Dr. Gardner is a registered professional engineer in the state of California.
