About the Book
The European Handbook of Neurological Management, published in collaboration with the European Federation of Neurological Societies (EFNS), is a unique book that brings together peer-reviewed guidelines for the treatment and management of neurological disease. For the first time, neurologists can find advice on management aspects of most neurological disorders that is either evidence-based or, where the evidence is inadequate, the consensus guidance of an international European panel of experts.
The guidelines fall naturally into sections that cover: *Investigation: cerebrospinal fluid analysis, imaging, diagnostic antibodies and skin biopsy *Major neurological diseases: stroke, migraine, Parkinson's disease, dystonia, mild traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's disease *Neuromuscular diseases: motor neuron disease, inflammatory neuropathy, muscular dystrophy and myasthenia gravis *Infections: HIV infection and encephalitis *Neurological problems: treatment of neuropathic pain, acute relapses of multiple sclerosis and status epilepticus, to name but a few *Sleep disorders: Narcolepsy, other sleep disorders and restless legs syndrome *Cognitive rehabilitation. The European Handbook of Neurological Management is a book that any neurologist, without regard to national boundaries, will find a useful aid in the day-to-day management of neurological disease.

From 2001 until 2005 Professor Hughes was Vice-President of the European Federation of Neurological Societies and Chair of its Scientific Committee. He is currently President of the international Peripheral Nerve Society. Michael Brainin is Professor of Clinical Neurology at the Danube University in Krems, Austria, where he chairs the Center of Clinical Neurosciences. He is head of the Department of Neurology at the Landesklinikum Donauregion, a university affiliated teaching hospital. Since 2005, he also acts as director of the Department of Clinical Medicine and Preventive Medicine at the Danube University. His main scientific interests focus on cerebrovascular disorders including early treatment and rehabilitation. Up to 2004 he chaired the EFNS Scientist Panel on Stroke and now acts as Executive Member of the European Stroke Initiative, the International Stroke Society and the World Stroke Federation. In the World Stroke Federation he also chairs the Professional Education Group. Nils Erik Gilhus has been a Professor of Neurology at University of Bergen and a consultant Neurologist at Haukeland University Hospital since 1987. He is chairman of Department of Clinical Medicine, University of Bergen, and was Faculty Dean 2003-2005. His main research interest is neuroimmunological disorders. Professor Gilhus is since 2005 the chair of the scientific committee of the European Federation of Neurological Societies, and he is a member of the management committee of European School of Neuroimmunology and World Federation for Neurorehabilitation.
Review :
"The strengths of this endeavour are the appealing concept of bringing together multiple evidence-based guidelines into one corpus; the broad, multinational and expert European authorship ... .This book should be well received by European neurologists and neurological trainees." (Practical Neurology, January 2008)
