Field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) are an increasingly popular technology for implementing digital signal processing (DSP) systems. By allowing designers to create circuit architectures developed for the specific applications, high levels of performance can be achieved for many DSP applications providing considerable improvements over conventional microprocessor and dedicated DSP processor solutions. The book addresses the key issue in this process specifically, the methods and tools needed for the design, optimization and implementation of DSP systems in programmable FPGA hardware. It presents a review of the leading-edge techniques in this field, analyzing advanced DSP-based design flows for both signal flow graph- (SFG-) based and dataflow-based implementation, system on chip (SoC) aspects, and future trends and challenges for FPGAs. The automation of the techniques for component architectural synthesis, computational models, and the reduction of energy consumption to help improve FPGA performance, are given in detail. Written from a system level design perspective and with a DSP focus, the authors present many practical application examples of complex DSP implementation, involving: high-performance computing e.g. matrix operations such as matrix multiplication; high-speed filtering including finite impulse response (FIR) filters and wave digital filters (WDFs); adaptive filtering e.g. recursive least squares (RLS) filtering; transforms such as the fast Fourier transform (FFT). FPGA-based Implementation of Signal Processing Systems is an important reference for practising engineers and researchers working on the design and development of DSP systems for radio, telecommunication, information, audio-visual and security applications. About the Author :
Roger Woods is currently a Professor in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Queen's University, Belfast and his main research interests include programmable hardware systems using FPGAs and design tools for heterogeneous platforms and low power VLSI. He has a wealth of experience in the field of FPGAs and digital systems, having lectured in these areas for the last 15 years. He also leads a research team looking at the implementation of complex DSP systems, is a member of the IEEE Signal Processing Society Technical Committee for the Design and Implementation of Signal Processing Systems, and is Chairman of the IEE professional network on Microelectronics and Embedded Systems. He has considerable industrial experience designing chips for international companies and is now looking at the implementation of programmable systems for next generation programmable networks. He has published over 130 papers in the areas of VLSI and FPGA implementation and holds two patents. John McAllister is currently a Lecturer on Embedded Systems at the Queen's University, Belfast, a post he has held since 2004 after completing his PhD. During his study, he worked closely with QinetiQ and was responsible for developing an FPGA high-level design flow using dataflow design techniques. He also worked on a number of examples for recursive filtering and blind source separation. Gaye Lightbody is a Research Assistant at the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland. She received her PhD from Queen's University, Belfast in 2000 and her main areas of research have been in VLSI hardware designs for Recursive Least Squares (RLS) filtering systems. She previously worked for Amphion Semiconductor Ltd developing architectures for speech and audio applications. Ying Ye is now a Research Assistant at the University of Edinburgh, after receiving her PhD from Queen's University, Belfast in 2003. She has worked on the development of the IRIS synthesis tools at Queen's University and also spent time with the China Ship Research & Development Academy (CSRDA) in Beijing involved in research, development and management of computer correlative problems.
