About the Book

As the speed of networks increase, users expect to deliver high bandwidth to their applications. There is much debate in the research community over the choice of protocols for these new networks. Discussion about new protocol architectures remains at centre stage in the research community even as the user community continues to standardize protocols such as Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). New transport protocols as well as resource management mechanisms are being designed to support real time multimedia applications on gigabit networks. This volume focuses on state-of-the-art protocol design and efficient implementation techniques, interfacing high speed networks to high performance host computers and ATM as a protocol for high speed networks.

Table of Contents:
Part 1 Protocol architecture I: reducing protocol ordering constraints to improve performance, D. Feldmeier and A. McAuley; putting the transport layer on VLSI - the PROMPT protocol chip, T. Balraj and Y. Yemini; the Heidelberg high speed transport system - first performance results, T. Schuett and M. Farber. Part 2 Protocol architecture II: high-speed OSI protocol bypass algorithm with window flow control, Y. Thia and C. Woodside; a new label-based source routing for multi-ring networks, Y. Ofek et al. Part 3 Medium access: a performance analysis of S++ - a MAC protocol for high-speed networks, G. Watson and S. Tohme; a simple scheme for slot reuse without latency in dual bus, O. Sharon and A. Segall. Part 4 Applications and resource management: resource allocation protocol for multiparty connections in broadband networks, E. Chow; using high-performance networks to enable computational aeroscience applications, M. Johnson. Part 5 ATM I: interfacing a multiprocessor protocol engine to an ATM network, M. McCutcheon et al; private ATM networks, D. Greaves and D. McAuley. Part 6 ATM II: reliability of adaptation layers, D. Greene and B. Lyles. Part 7 Host interface I: the Bay Bridge, a high speed bridge/router, R. Edell et al; a parallel approach to OSI connection-oriented protocols, M. Goldberg et al. Part 8 Host interface II: multiprocessing in high performance IP routers, A. Tantawy and M. Zitterbart; FINE - a high-speed transport protocol family and its advanced service interface, W. Zimmer.
