About the Book

The visual way of expressing and comprehending information is perhaps the most ancient, immediate and effective way. Image processing and database technologies came of age during the Eighties, though a new challenge arose from the need to handle not only the complexity of pictures, but also a large volume of pictures. Extending database technologies to capture visual aspects is an exciting new research area. This second volume highlights the latest results from leading laboratories all over the world, identifying new research directions. Main subject areas include: theory of spatial representations; image indexing and query techniques; visual and multimedia data structures; visual interfaces and object oriented approaches; and access and search methodologies on moving pictures.

Table of Contents:
Spatial Representations. Invited Paper: Advances in the Theory of Spatial Relations (Shi-Kuo Chang). Visualizing Spatial Query Results: The Limitations of SQL (M.J. Egenhofer, W. Kuhn). The Spatial Locality and Dynamic Clustering Tree in Spatial Databases 19 (K.J. Li, R. Laurini). A New Method for Spatial Reasoning in Image Database (Ming Tang, Song De Ma). Representing and Retrieving Symbolic Pictures by Spatial Relations (G. Costagliola, M. Tucci, Shi-Kuo Chang). Image Indexing Techniques. An Approach to Image Indexing of Documents (P.L. Stanchev, A.W.M. Smeulders, F.C.A. Groen). Indexing and Fuzzy Logic-Based Retrieval of Color Images (E. Binaghi, I. Gagliardi, R. Schettini). Indexing of Images by Pictorial Information (T. Gevers, A.W.M. Smeulders). Image Coding in Visual Databases (J. White, A. Klinger). Video Indexing. Automatic Video Indexing and Full-Video Search for Object Appearances (A. Nagasaka, Y. Tanaka). Multiple-Access Technology on a Moving Picture for Visual Database (N. Sakurai, J. Kishigami, N. Kotani). Invited Paper: Visualizing Humans by Computer (N. Magnenat-Thalmann). Query Processing.
