About the Book

The quest for a consistent and systematic theory for damage in composite materials is being pursued today by many researchers, thus the complex nature of the various damage mechanisms in a composite material is currently the subject of extensive investigation. Such damage mechanisms include matrix cracking, fibre fracture, delamination and debonding. Others include fatigue cracks, progressive brittle damage, and the effect of heterogeneities. Extensive research work, both theoretical and experimental, is being devoted to the study of these mechanisms. It is now widely recognized as that a single theory may not be sufficient to model all these types of damage. Therefore, the present book is aimed at presenting some of the different theories available today, along with the experimental techniques being pursued. The ten articles review recent work conducted on damage composite materials. Different aspects of this topic are discussed, ranging from purely theoretical treatments to extensive experimental investigations. This work should be of interest to those involved in the study and development of composite materials, particularly their damage mechanisms.
