About the Book

The 66 papers, including 8 invited papers, in this volume concentrate on the latest developments in bioceramics materials. Important aspects of materials preparation and characterization, and processing methods, are examined. Bioinert ceramics, surface reactive ceramics and resorbable ceramics are reviewed in detail for both bulk and composite form including inorganic particulate, fiber and whisker reinforcement, and as films and coatings. The important subject of material-tissue interaction is also examined. Recent progress in clinical applications and follow-up studies in dental, maxillofacial and orthopaedic areas are reported on by leading experts in the field, giving a comprehensive overview of recent trends in the applications of bioceramic materials.

Table of Contents:
A selection: 1. Materials Elaboration. 1.1 Bulk Materials. Bioinert Materials. Bioceramics by Gel supported precipitation (GSP) process (P. Fassina et al.). Joining of dental ceramics to titanium by metallic interlayers (M. Kononen, J. Kivilhati). 1.1 Bulk Materials. Bioactive Materials. The role of the glass phase in bioactive glass-ceramics (Z. Strnad). Mica-tyne and phosphate glass ceramics for medicine (W. Holand et al.). 1.2 Coatings. Low pressure plasma spraying of ceramic coatings for biomedical appplication (F. Gitzhofer et al.). 2. Materials Characterization. 2.1 Bioinert Materials. Structure and properties of carbon materials for medical applications (M. Blazewicz et al.). Radioactivity measurements of zirconia powders (G. Capannesi et al.). 2.2 Bioactive Materials. The compositional dependence of bioactive glasses and glass-ceramics (L.L. Hench). 3. Material-Tissue Interfactions. The bone implant response of a new macroporous hydroxyapatite (P.M. Marquis, J.E. Davies). Chemical characterization of carbonated hydroxyapatite and its bonding to bone in vivo (E.G. Nordstrom et al.). Analysis of the interface between bone and an active surface glass (A.M. Gatti et al.). Comparison of bone formation by ectopic implantation of apatite or alumina-bone marow cell composites (H. Kurosawa et al.). 4. Clinical Applications and Follow-up Studies. 4.1 Dental and Maxillofacial Applications. Requirements of clinical evaluation of dental implants (D. Axmann, W. Schulte). Jaw augmentation with hydroxylapatite (E. Fischer-Brandies). 4.2 Orthopaedics Applications. The case of a composite hip prosthesis (S.F. Hulbert, S.D. Cook). Role of alumina ceramics in surgical implants (G. Heimke). Bioceramics in orthopaedics. Five years experience with the BMO frialit hip endoprostheses (W. Zacharias, D. Stock).
