About the Book

There is still place for innovation in cable-stayed bridge techniques, and the increase in their span length occurring during this last decade of the twentieth century is remarkable. The cable-stayed bridge is currently undergoing considerable development as a bridge type. The contributions in this volume review past experiences, evaluate recent progress in the techniques concerned, and discuss future prospects for the construction and form of cable-stayed bridges. The aim of this publication is to provide a current overview on the design and construction of cable-stayed bridges in one volume, with the main emphasis being on steel bridges. However, prestressed concrete bridges and the characteristics common to both steel and concrete bridges are also examined in many of the papers. The issues reviewed include, history, structural form, stay cables, dynamic behaviour, and design and construction. Containing contributions written by leading world authorities on bridge engineering, the volume will provide a useful reference source for all those involved in studying the design and aesthetics of bridges.

Table of Contents:
Past, present and future of cable-stayed bridges (F. Leonhardt, W. Zellner). Form and aesthetics in cable-stayed bridges (D.P. Billington, G. Deodatis). On the detailing of cable-stayed bridges (J. Schlaich). Erection of cable-stayed bridges (M. Virlogeux). Precast and composite concrete cable-stayed bridges (P.R. Taylor). Cables for cable-stayed bridges (M. Ohashi). The dynamic behaviour of cable-stayed bridges fundamentals and parametric studies (T.A. Wyatt). Cable-stayed bridges under seismic action (A.M. Abdel-Ghaffar). Seismic behaviour of cable-stayed bridges (K. Kawashima, S. Unjoh). Cable supported bridges under wind action (R.L. Wardlaw). Design considerations for wind effects on long-span cable-stayed bridges (T. Miyata). A summarized account of damping capacity and measures against wind action in cable-stayed bridges in Japan (N. Narita, K. Yokoyama). Design of a long-span cable-supported bridge across the great belt in Denmark - 25 years of experience and evolution (N.J. Gimsing). Cable-stayed bridges in North America (M.C. Tang). Cable-stayed bridges in China (H. Xiang). Cable-stayed bridges in Japan (M. Ito). Prestressed concrete (PC) cable-stayed bridge constructed on an expressway - The Tomei Ashigara bridge (I. Takuwa et al.). The design and construction of the Yokohama Bay bridge (K. Maeda et al.). Earthquake-resistant and wind-resistant design of the Higashi-Kobe bridge (Y. Yamada et al.). The technical challenge of a long cable-stayed bridge - Tatara Bridge (T. Endo et al.).
