About the Book

This publication is based on the final report of an operation entitled ``Stimulation'', sponsored by the EEC. Eight European laboratories participated in this cooperative effort. The papers presented provide a current overview on the latest developments in the field of Solid State Ionics, investigating and demonstrating the feasibility of solid state microbatteries. Recent progress in applied and fundamental research is discussed and many significant achievements are reported. The broad scope of the papers in this volume will facilitate the reader towards a deeper understanding of the basic processes in fast-ion conduction and intercalation, as well as paving the way for further research. The original results obtained within the framework of this project have already been published in a companion volume entitled Solid State Ionics edited by M. Balkanski and C. Julien. Together these two publications constitute a firm basis for the future development of this very promising field of Solid State Ionics.
