About the Book

With advanced materials being in the midst of a widely acknowledged revolution, there is relentless pressure on scientists and engineers to be on the cutting edge of emerging theories and design methodologies. This conference was organized so that experts from many different countries would have an opportunity to interact and exchange ideas. Thirty technical papers are presented in this volume. Topics covered include the behaviour of composites, characterization of mechanical properties and damage, structural component repair, finite element method and biomaterials. In addition to providing an overall view of the current status in advanced material theories and technologies, the application-specific character of materials is also emphasized.

Table of Contents:
Influence of thermal/mechanical interaction on material characterization (G.C. Sih). Invited Lectures. The development and test of thermoplastic composite speed brake (C.-L. Ong, H. Chin). The future of biomaterials in Canada (D.C. Smith et al,). Technical Presentations. I. Material Characterization. Recent developments in the micromechanics of advanced composites (M.-J. Pindera, J. Aboudi). Temperature dependence of the viscoelastic behaviour of PEEK resin and PEEK composite (X.R. Xiao, A.H. Cardon). Thermomicrohardness analysis (TmHA) of glassy materials (S. Yannacopoulos, S.O. Kasap). Some considerations on thermosetting polymers as matrices for composites (D. Feldman). Effect of melting history on the crystalline characteristics of poly (etheretherketone) aromatic polymer composite (X.R. Xiao, S.V. Hoa). II. Composite Joints. Criticality of local three-dimensional stresses in a symmetric adhesively bonded joint (J.T. Pindera, G. Wang). Edge effects analysis and influence of defects in adhesively bonded composite joints using interface finite elements (Y. Hadj-Rabah et al.). The effect of through-the-thickness holes on the tensile strength of thick laminates (M.D. Raizenne, S.R. Hall). On the maximum strength of single bolt fastened joints of graphite/epoxy laminate (W.M. Lucking). III. Composite Structures. Effect of microstructure on the response of composite tubes (M.S. Derstine, M.-J. Pindera). Response of symmetrically laminated rectangular plates subjected to heating (K.S. Sivakumaran). Residual mechanical properties of graphite/epoxy composites after low velocity impact (C.-C. An, D.A. Wilson). Three dimensional composite finite element formulation for stress analysis of anisotropic laminate structures (Q. Huang et al.). IV. Biomaterials. A finite element model for porous implants (H. Vaillancourt et al.). A feasibility study for the replacement of articular cartilage with a thermoplastic elastomer (A.J. Yeadon et al.). Surface chemistry and physical strength of radiation-treated suture materials (G.R. Palmer, R.E. Baier). Resistance to environmental degradation in Tecoflex Poly(ether urethane): correlation of SEM and mechanical data (J.M. Lee et al.). V. Fracture and Fatigue. Fracture characteristics of amine cured epoxies used as composite matrix (J. Verdu et al.). Identification of fatigue threshold and limit of glass fiber/epoxy composite by acoustic emission (C.
