About the Book

Design and manufacturing-preparation activities can be regarded as information processing activities that, starting from the original concept of the product and the use of product models, generate detailed manufacturing control information and the framework which describes all the necessary information about the product and its processing. In order to achieve a higher level of automation for design and manufacturing processes, it is essential to analyse engineering information as transferred to and manipulated among related activities. It is also vitally important to prepare the framework which is to capture the information systematically; this is known as the engineering knowledge. It includes basic information such as dimensions, tolerances, assembling, mechanics, etc., and also expert knowledge which strongly depends on the respective engineering and product domains. This book examines the methods used in the representation and manipulation of this engineering knowledge, as well as in the generation and manipulation of product models.

Table of Contents:
Intelligent CAD (H. Yoshikawa). Knowledge management for preliminary computer-aided mechanical design (D.C. Anderson, R.H. Crawford). The basic research issues in computer-aided design and manufacturing processes (K.K. Wang). Bionical manufacturing systems - Bio-modelon based system design (N. Okino). Spatial reasoning: From robotics to engineering (J.C. Latombe). Artificial intelligence in computer aided design (S. Ohsuga). Product modeling for design and production (O. Bjorke). Knowledge integrated product modeling for design and manufacture (F.-L. Krause). Modeling design processes as evolving first order interpretations (T. Yagiu). Product modeling for flexible integration of design and manufacturing activities (F. Kimura, H. Suzuki, M. Inui). Improving product models and kernel modellers (I.C. Braid). Feature-based product modeling for process planning (M. Mantyla). A framework for 3D modeling: Constraint-based description and non-manifold geometric modeling (S. Kawabe, K. Shimada, H. Masuda). Tools for intelligent human communication and collaboration for better manufacturing (T. Kjellberg). Capturing context dependent rules from interaction sequences: An example for mechanical design (U. Cugini). Development of the human interface for interactive software (H.R. Hartson). Artificial evolution and intimate machines (M. Toda).
