About the Book

Historically, thermoplastic polymers have been used extensively as matrix materials for injection molded, short fiber reinforced composites. In the early 1980's, polymer chemists developed advanced thermoplastic matrices suitable for high-performance composites. The result is a new class of composites with short processing times, damage tolerance superior to that of traditional thermosetting polymer matrix composites and an adequate solvent resistance. The development of advanced thermoplastic composites has initiated a tremendous worldwide scientific activity and this text documents some of those original contributions to the field. This volume provides a report on the structure, properties and thermomechanical response of thermoplastic composites. Emphasis is placed on the role of the matrix on thermomechanical behaviour in various composite microstructures. This volume is intended for researchers and practising engineers, who wish to enhance their knowledge in this rapidly developing field. The text will also prove valuable as a reference for graduate students who specialize in this field.
