About the Book

The advent of Information Highways has recently been heralded as the next generation of communication networks. Consensus has it that these highways will be based on ATM networks. However, despite the tremendous progress in the development of ATM technology, there are still many problems to resolve, such as bandwidth allocation, congestion control and quality of service. The emphasis of this publication is on high speed networks and it addresses many of these problems. Contributions, sourced from experts across the field, are organized around the following topics: high speed LANs and MANs, performance of ATM switch architectures, congestion control and error recovery, quality of service, protocols, protocol measurements and implementation, and ATM motivated queueing theory.

Table of Contents:
Part 1 High speed LANs and MANs: analytical modelling and performance of dual-bus high-speed networks under the adaptive cycle cell insertion (ACCI) protocol, L.F.M. de Moraes and R.C.A. Ferreira; schemes for slot reuse in CRMA, O. Sharon and A. Segall; performance of the co-operative random token protocol for high-speed radio LANs, J. Konorski et al. Part 2 ATM switches: performance analysis of an ATM switching node with three-state Markovian traffic generators and random spacing, Y. Xiong and B. Steyaert; the departure process of a finite capacity polling system with bursty and correlated input traffic, Y.F. Jou et al; route discovery in multistage switch fabrics, A. Herkersdorf et al. Part 3 Congestion control and error recovery: discrete-time analysis of adaptive rate control mechanisms, E. Altman et al; a lost cell recovery technique using convolutional coding at the ATM adaptation layer in B-ISDN/ATM, A. Dholakia et al. Part 4 Quality of service I: estimating packet (L3_PDU) loss probabilities from cell (L2_PDU) loss probabilities for networks supporting the SMDS service, F.Y.S. Lin and J.C. Lu; on the cell loss distribution of protocol data units in ATM networks, H. Yamashita and R.O. Onvural. Part 5 Quality of service II: a study of the jitter in ATM multiplexers, C. Bisdikian et al. Part 6 Protocols: performance of frame relay services on ATM networks, L. Fratta et al; a medium access control protocol for an ATM access network, O. Casals et al. Part 7 Protocol measurements and implementation: protocol performance measurements in a heterogeneous network environment, C. Fan and R. Ruppelt; protocol processing in communication subsystems for high speed networks, D.N. Serpanos. Part 8 Queueing theory: stochastic fluid models for a buffer loaded by Markov modulated traffic with near complete decomposability characteristics, K.P. Kontovasilis and N.M. Mitrou; approximate analysis of discrete-time networks with or without blocking, D.D. Kouvatsos et al. (Part Contents).
