About the Book

This book deals with developments in the highly topical field, in Clinical Neurophysiology of namely the use of spinal or brain evoked potentials, nerve stimulation, or transcranial motor stimulation for monitoring function in the course of neurosurgical or orthopedic interventions. It is designed for the surgeons, anesthesiologists, neurologists and clinical neurophysiologists who are increasingly concerned about how best to deal with the many faceted challenges of monitoring the functional integrity of central or peripheral nervous systems in the operating theater. Emphasis is placed on a variety of state-of-the-art monitoring methodologies and results that are relevant for specific surgical interventions on the brain, brainstem, spinal cord, spinal roots, plexus or peripheral nerves. Also included are data about the practical design of facilities, pitfalls to be avoided, recent trends and advances. The inclusion of detailed protocols for the various monitoring methods should be found of practical value to implement a wide variety of surveillance issues.

Table of Contents:
Preface. Abbreviations. Chapter 1: Somatosensory evoked potentials in neuromonitoring (J.E. Desmedt). Chapter 2: Auditory nerve and brainstem responses (ABR): physiological basis and clinical uses (H. Sohmer). Chapter 3: Methods for steadily updating the averaged responses during neuromonitoring (J.A. Sgro, R.G. Emerson and T.A. Pedley). Chapter 4: Transcranial stimulation: technique and interpretation of the effects of stimulating motor and non-motor cortical regions in man (R.Q. Cracco et al.). Chapter 5: Motor cortical stimulation in intact man: physiological mechnism and application in intraoperative monitoring (J.C. Rothwell et al.). Chapter 6: Monitoring neuromuscular transmission during anesthesia (D.A. White, R.S. Jaffe and G.A. Gronert). Chapter 7: Surgical monitoring of cranial and peripheral nerves (J.R. Daube and C.M. Harper). Chapter 8: Spinal cord monitoring with spinal potentials evoked by direct stimulation of the spinal cord (T. Tamaki). Chapter 9: Monitoring spinal cord surgery with cortical somatosensory evoked potentials (M. Nuwer). Chapter 10: Intraoperative somatosensory evoked potentials monitoring of spinal surgery (W. Young and D. Mollin). Chapter 11: Intraoperative spinal cord monitoring using electric responses to stimulation of caudal spinal cord or motor cortex (H. Matsuda and A. Shimazu).
