About the Book

The primary purpose of this book is to provide a range of tested BASIC programs, which are useful for solving some of the problems frequently encountered in fisheries science and related resource assessment disciplines. Taken together, the ``package'' of programs may be considered to be a system, hence the name Fisheries Science Applications Systems (FSAS) which has been adopted as the title of the package. In the first chapter, an overview of the FSAS system and its components is presented. The second chapter is a tutorial on data entry, data editing, and the use of a typical application program. The remaining text summarizes each application program, describing the analyses it performs and providing citations to the fisheries literature. The programs are considered to be of potential value to the practicing fisheries scientist who has access to a personal computer. In addition, they will be of value to fisheries scientists and managers in the developing world, who have access to minimal computing facilities and peripheral equipment.

Table of Contents:
1. Introduction. General considerations. System design criteria. 2. The FSAS system. System design and operations. System use and capabilities. FSAS tutorial. Using a spreadsheet with the FSAS. 3. FSAS application programs (shell type). FISHPARM: Nonlinear parameter estimation for fisheries. UNISTAT: Univariate statistics with histograms. BIREG: A series of bivariate regression analyses. SEGREG: Segmented regression analysis. POWER: Power relationship calculated by ordinary least squares on log-transformed data with bias correction. PRINCOMP: Finding a 95% equal frequency ellipse from principal components analysis. BARTER: Bartlett's test for homogeneity of variance (including four transformations). LP: Linear programming via simplex method and some optimization examples. RAFAIL: von Bertalanffy growth equation. FABGROW: von Bertalanffy growth equation estimated by Fabans' method for tagging data. RICKER: Ricker's yield model. LCOH: Jones' length related quasicohort analysis. PROD2: Cohort production estimates with variance. B-H3: Beverton-Holt YPR equation with constant parameters and yield maximization, varying both F and age at first capture. HILLIS: Assessing the rate of discarding commercial species when the total weight of discards is known. MARTEN: Calculating mortality rates and optimum yields from length samples. MESH 1: Effects of mesh size on catches and immediate and long-term changes in catch. MESH 2: Yields by species and mesh size. OPTAGE: One variable minimization method to compute optimum age and size. ZIPPIN: Population estimation using removal-depletion. NETMED: Confidence limits of medians for a series of net catches.
