About the Author :
Dr. Carmen Quintano is an Associate Professor at the University of Valladolid in Spain and a researcher at the Institute of Sustainable Forest Management. Her research centers on utilizing remote sensing techniques for environmental applications, particularly in the context of forest fires. With nearly fifty peer-reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings, and book chapters to her name, Dr. Quintano has established herself as a prolific author in her field. She has fostered collaborations with leading scientists globally and secured significant research funding for her work. Dr. Quintano has played a key role in over 10 research projects, making substantial contributions to various applications related to forest fires. Dr. Alfonso Fernández-Manso, a Forest Engineer from the University of Lleida, is a Professor of Applied Forest Fire Engineering since 2022. His research focuses on analyzing fire damage in forest ecosystems and human communities. With a background in over 20 research projects related to wildfire effects, he has led 18 projects funded by prestigious institutions such as the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and Junta de Castilla y León. Dr. Fernández-Manso has over 20 years of experience in esteemed global institutions dedicated to forest fire research, including the VIPER Laboratory at the University of California, ITC at the University of Twente, and INPE in Brazil. Dr. José Manuel Fernández-Guisuraga is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of León and a member of the Applied Ecology and Remote Sensing (GEAT) research lab. His research focuses on utilizing remote sensing techniques to assess wildfire impacts on Mediterranean fire-prone ecosystems and how changing wildfire regimes affect Mediterranean ecosystems' functioning. He has co-authored over 45 papers in JCR-indexed journals and has contributed to more than fifteen research projects, two of which he led as the principal investigator. Dr. Leonor Calvo, a Full Professor in Ecology since 2020, holds a degree in Biology from the University of León. Her research interests focus on analyzing the effects of disturbances, particularly forest fires, on terrestrial ecosystems' structure and functioning at community and landscape scales. Dr. Calvo has been involved in over 30 research projects related to studying perturbation effects on terrestrial ecosystems, including plant community responses and regeneration mechanisms post-disturbance. She has led 13 projects funded by entities such as the Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad, Junta de Castilla y León, and the Biodiversity Foundation. Additionally, Dr. Calvo has contributed as an "external expert" in the RUBICODE project, "Rationalising biodiversity conservation for ecosystem service provision in a changing World," supported by the European Commission.
