About the Book

This is an introductory text mainly for medical students and junior doctors. Childhood disease is presented in a real life context where the social determinants of illness are examined as well as the genetic origins. The emphasis is on differential diagnosis from a presenting problem, and on a rational approach to treatment. Australian paediatric training lasts longer and is at a higher level than in the UK; in addition, conditions have a different incidence. Although this textbook was originally produced to meet local Australian needs, it now has a strong international following among those looking to teach paediatrics in greater depth. It is a tried and tested book designed to be easy to learn from and written to suit examination learning. It can be read in entirety during paediatric placement. The differences from previous edition: - reorganised to eliminate less common conditions; new chapters on: genetics, poisoning and envenomation, headache, hyperactivity, minor behavioural disorders, future trends in paediatrics; new learning aids: practice points and examinable material highlighted; case histories and self-assessment material added.
