About the Book

Clay materials have been part of human life since ancient times and now a new role for clays has been found as a highly promising material for regenerative medicine. Being a non-toxic, cheap and widespread natural mineral, clay nanoparticles were unexpectedly found to enhance cell adhesion, spreading and proliferation. Unique properties of both natural and synthetic clays can be modified by combining them with various natural or artificial substances. The use of nanoclays in tissue engineering is in its infancy and a current thorough overview of this topic can help to assess perspectives of clays as a new hope for tissue engineering development. Key Selling Points: Introduces clay as a promising material for regenerative medicine Discusses how nanoclay based bioinks can be used for 3D printing Examines nanoclay intra-cell and intra-organism behaviors Reviews some properties of both natural and synthetic clays that can be further modified by combining them with various natural or artificial substances

Table of Contents:
Introduction to Tissue Engineering. Nanoclays: Overview and Applications. Halloysite in Tissue Engineering. Montmorillonite in Tissue Engineering. Bentonite in Tissue Engineering. Sepiolite in Tissue Engineering. Imogolite in Tissue Engineering. Synthetic Clays (Laponite) in Tissue Engineering. Nanoclay and Hydroxyapatite-Based Composites for Tissue Engineering. Clay-based Bioinks for Tissue Engineering Applications. Natural Polymer and Clay Hybrid Nanocomposites for Applications in Tissue Engineering. Conclusions and Outlook.

About the Author :
Rawil Fakhrullin is Professor and Leading Researcher at the Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology, Kazan Federal University, Republic of Tatarstan, Russian Federation. He was born in 1981 near Kyiv, Ukraine. He graduated (MSc) from Kazan State University, Republic of Tatarstan, in 2003, later receiving a PhD in Biochemistry form Kazan State University (2006), and an honorary DSc degree in Microbiology from Kazan Federal University (2011). His research interests are focused on development of novel biomimetic materials (including functionalised cells), cell-based therapy, controllable assembly of living cells into multicellular clusters and fabrication of cell-based biosensors. Currently, his group investigates the applications of clay nanoparticles in tissue engineering, drug delivery and also on nanotoxicity and biosafety of clay nanomaterials. He edited two books for RSC Publishing and a book for Elsevier, published 70 peer reviewed papers and 6 book chapters, his works were cited 1650 times and his H-index is 26. Currently, he serves as Associate Editor for RSC Advances, a RSC Publishing journal. R. Fakhrullin was named the Best Young Scientist in the Republic of Tatarstan in 2011. Giuseppe Lazzara is associate professor at the Department of Physics and Chemistry, University of Palermo, Italy since 2015. He received his PhD degree in Chemistry in 2007. He was Postdoc at the Chemistry Department, Lund University (Sweden). He is involved in several projects on halloysite clay nanotubes for drug delivery and conservation of cultural heritage. Lazzara has more than 100 publications in peer-reviewed international journals and 3 book chapters. His works were cited 1900 times and his H-index is 26. He is Coordinator of the scientific committee of the Interdivisional Group of Calorimetry and Thermal Analysis (GICAT) of the Italian Chemistry Society. G. Lazzara was awarded for "Excellence in Thermodynamics" as young scientist "IACT Doctoral Award" from the International Association of Chemical Thermodynamics sponsored by Elsevier in 2005.
