It must never be forgotten that Canada's chief exports consist of the necessities of living which her customers must buy and pay for. People can not get on without wheat, meat, lumber, cheese, butter, and the like, and gold is always forthcoming for such necessaries. That is why Chicago, the capital of the agricultural West of the United States, has generally been able to laugh at the frenzied financiers of New York, when their speculative structure tumbled down about their ears. The grain held in Chicago was always worth its price in the world's markets, and the most cautious banlker would always lend on its security. There is no security so gilt edged as something which a man must put into his stomach by the usual route. Again, men must live in houses, and a house cannot be built without lumber - Canadian lumber. And so on. That is why we know that Canada's purchas ing power will show no falling-off in the current year, and the British manufacturer should bear this fact in mind when he discusses with himself the question: How much shall I spend this year on working up my Canadian busi ness? Let him remember that whatever his Canadian customers order can be paid for - because the British con sumer must pay for the Canadian commodities which are for him the basal necessities of existence. And, for very good reasons previously mentioned in these columns, it will be profitable in the end to increase his outlay on personal representation, the collecting of detailed infor mation, and advertisement. The most serious feature of the American economic crisis is this - the inadequacy of American workmanship and the degeneration of American manufactured products have been finally exposed. On the other hand, the reputation of British manufacturers for durability, excellence of material, and honest workman ship never stood so high in the Dominion. It will be entirely the British manufacturer's fault if his American rival's loss is not his own gain so far as the Canadian market is concerned.
