Ethics and Public Policy: A Philosophical Inquiry

Train crashes cause, on average, a handful of deaths each year in the UK. Technologies exist that would save the lives of some of those who die. Yet these technical innovations would cost hundreds of millions of pounds. Should we spend the money? How can we decide how to trade off life against financial cost? About the Author :
Jonathan Wolff is Professor Philosophy at University College London, where he is also Director of the UCL Centre for Philosophy, Justice and Health. He is a member of the Nuffield Councils on Bioethics and Working Party on Research Involving Anmials. He is a member Demos and was a Trustee for the Responsibility on Gambling Trust (2003-9). He is editor, with Tim Crane, of the Routledge Philosophy Guidebooks series. He also writes a monthly column on higher education for the Guardian newspaper.
