About the Book

Approaching Multivariate Analysis provides an introduction to a range of advanced statistical techniques that are used in psychology, in an accessible, non-mathematical way. The authors take a practical approach with an emphasis on helping the reader to gain an understanding of what each method is for, what it does, and how it does it. Topics covered in this book are: ANOVA, MANOVA, ANCOVA Multiple regression and partial correlation Factor analysis, cluster analysis and multidimensional scaling Path analysis, and mediation and moderation analysis Discriminant analysis, logistic regression and loglinear analysis. Instructions on how to do the analyses and how to make sense of the results are fully illustrated with dialogue boxes and output tables from SPSS, and details of how to interpret and report the output are also provided. This book aims to get students started, and prepares them to approach more comprehensive treatments with confidence. This makes it an ideal text for psychology students, and for students and academic staff in disciplines other than psychology that use multivariate methods.

Table of Contents:
Preface. Multivariate techniques in context. Analysis of variance (ANOVA). Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). Multiple regression. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). Partial correlation, mediation and moderation. Path Analysis. Factor analysis. Discriminant analysis and logistic regression. Cluster analysis. Multidimensional scaling. Loglinear models. Further reading. List of books. Glossary. Abbreviations.

About the Author :
John Todman has lectured in the Psychology Department at the University of Dundee, first as a Lecturer, then as Senior Lecturer, then as a Professor, since 1976. During that period he has taught, in addition to aspects of cognitive psychology, design and analysis at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. His research has been primarily in the areas of computer-aided communication for people without speech, and in computer anxiety. Pat Dugard is a consultant living in Shetland. Until 1999, she worked at the University of Abertay Dundee teaching statistics and providing statistical support and consultancy for researchers in psychology, engineering and other areas. Since then she has worked on a book with John Todman, with Open University and WEA students, and done statistical work for engineers at Abertay and community groups in Shetland.

Review :
"This book is an excellent guide for anyone using SPSS for data analysis. Especially for the more advanced techniques the authors do an excellent job of not only illustrating the steps necessary to set up SPSS, but show a real understanding of the underlying concepts and the choices that need to be made in an intelligent analysis." - David Howell, Emeritus Professor of Psychology, University of Vermont "A welcome addition to the literature on advanced quantitative methods and statistics in psychology, taking the existing texts a valuable step further. The chapters on mediation and moderation, multidimensional scaling, and the use of AMOS for path analysis are particularly useful for final year undergraduate students and upwards." - David Giles, Lecturer in Research Methods, Lancaster University
