About the Book

Bayle's Dictionary is one of the best known and most influential works in the eighteenth century. Banned in Catholic France on first publication in 1697 it became a bestseller and ran into several editions and translations. Its merciless scientific and philosophical enquiring challenged all assumptions and blind reverence for authority, setting new standards for all future encyclopedists. Pierre Bayle (1647-1706) started his outstanding work as a means of correcting all the errors he had come across in previously published encyclopaedias and biographical dictionaries. But he goes beyond this, overwhelming the biographical entries with annotations and illustrative quotations from other writers. Bayle was the most important sceptical thinker of the seventeenth century, and his work provided "the Arsenal of the Enlightenment", becoming a major influence on the development of the ideas of Voltaire, Hume and Berkeley. In the face of criticism, Bayle produced a second edition in 1702 which further infuriated his opponents, as he defended and further clarified his views. This second English edition is prepared from the fourth French edition which had been much enlarged from Bayle's manuscripts. Edited, with a life of Bayle by the highly esteemed Pierre Desmaizeaux, this edition represents the most comprehensive English edition available.
