About the Book

Dorothy E. Smith is one of the leading feminist thinkers in North America. Her book consists of key published and unpublished essays which illustrate the full range of works on texts as social relations. Included here is Professor Smith's famous essay, K is mentally ill , which explores the concept of mental illness as a method of reading and writing a factual account of someone becoming mentally ill. There are also essays on femininity as discourse; the social relations of description in the context of a sociological study of the news; the micro-politics of a meeting; the 'structuring' of power through texts telling different versions of a confrontation between police and street people. The book concludes with a discussion of the distinctive properties of social organisation and the relations mediated by texts. Discursive and exhaustive, Texts, Facts, and Femininity will be of interest to students of women's studies, sociology, social theory, cultural theory, communications and psychology.

Table of Contents:
1. Introduction 2. K is mentally ill: The anatomy of a factual account 3. The social organization of subjectivity: an analysis of the micro-politics of a meeting 4. On sociological description: a method from Marx 5. The active text: A textual analysis of the social relations of public textual discourse. 6. Femininity as discourse. 7. Textually mediated social organization.

Review :

`There are several essays which are destined to become classics of their kind ...' - Times Higher Education Supplement

`A crucial book for feminists, for sociology and the new "political anthropological historical school". It informs us how we are differently "situated" in and through social relations, which texts and images mediate, organise and construct.' - Philip Corrigan, co-author of The Great Arch
