About the Book

A laser is a device which can emit an intense beam of light. Although it arose from Einstein's theories, the first working laser was not produced until 1960. Many different types of laser have been developed since then, and they have revolutionized numerous processes in industry, science and medicine. This book is an introductory guide to lasers in medicine and surgery and this third edition has been revised and updated to include the developments since the second edition. Using a minimum of technical language, it provides an overview of laser physics and clinical applications, and should be of interest to surgeons and doctors, safety officers, medical physicists, nurses, patients and interested laymen.

Table of Contents:
Part 1 Simplified physics: properties of waves; where does light come from?; special properties of laser light; the laser medium; what are sealed tube lasers? (carbon dioxide); energy concepts (Watts, power density, joules, fluence); optical concepts. Part 2 Laser - tissue effects: heating of tissue; absorption of light by tissue; hemostasis; hard tissues; pulsed laser energy as a means to refine tissue effect; other, non-heating, laser tissue effects. Part 3 Properties of individual lasers: the carbon dioxide (CO2) laser; the argon laser; KTP (potassium titanyl phosphate) laser and other 532 nm lasers; the Nd:Yag (neodymium:yttrium aluminium garnet) laser; holmium:Yag laser; the dye laser; the copper vapour laser; the excimer lasers. Part 4 Laser beam delivery systems: free beam versus hot tip devices; CO2 laser; argon and KTP (or other 532 nm) lasers; dye lasers; copper vapour lasers; excimer lasers; Nd:Yag lasers; aiming beams. Part 5 Overview of clinical applications: gynaecology; otorhinolaryngology; pulmonary medicine; neurosurgery; dermatology; cosmetic, plastic and reconstructive surgery; gastroenterology; urology; maxillo-facial and dental surgery; general surgery; orthopaedics; thoracic surgery; paediatric surgery; podiatry; ophthalmology; vascular and coronary laser angioplasty; photodynamic therapy; laserthermia or interstitial local hyperthermia; biostimulation. Part 6 Laser safety: general points; CO2 lasers; ND:Yag lasers; holmium;Yag lasers; pulsed dye lasers; argon, KTP and other 532 nm lasers; ...and there was light!!!
