About the Book

The main aim of this book is to provide a concise guide to the penetrant inspection method of non-destructive testing. The emphasis is practical and is aimed at indicating how the various processes can be applied. The book begins with a survey of the history of the technology and the introduction of non-destructive testing. It goes on to discuss the penetrant process itself, its development, principles of the processes, techniques, choice of methods and the equipment that can be used. It also examines the quality control of penetrant materials and processes. The final chapters deal with health and safety and the management of penetrant waste.

Table of Contents:
Part 1 Introduction: a brief history of technology; development of materials; energy sources; the demands of technology on materials; introduction of non-destructive testing methods. Part 2 Origins of defects: mechanisms of failure; stress raisers; defects and their origins. Part 3 Penetrant inspection - its development and application. Part 4 The principles of the processes: the process in outline; the physics and chemistry of the process; available systems; applications and limitations. Part 5 Penetrant techniques: preparation of surfaces; application of penetrants; water wash procedures; application of hydrophilic remover solutions; normal procedures for using solvent removers; application of lipophilic emulsifiers; special remover techniques; drying surfaces; application of developers; viewing condition, inspection and interpretation; post-cleaning; special techniques. Part 6 Choosing a penetrant system: specification requirements; part considerations; sensitivity considerations; safety factors; production considerations; ecological status; economic considerations. Part 7 Equipment for the penetrant processes: field inspection kits; manually operated penetrant lines; semi-automated penetrant lines; automatic penetrant lines; disposition of penetrant lines; requirements of individual stations. Part 8 Quality control of penetrant lines and control checks: quality control of penetrant chemicals during manufacture; periodic control of penetrant chemicals in use; quality control of penetrant equipment during manufacture; periodic control of equipment and accessories. Part 8 Specification and documentation: details of penetrant processing specifications; individual procedures; quality assurance standards; conclusion. Part 10 Health and safety in penetrant testing: health and safety aspects of penetrant processing; storage and handling; conclusion. Part 11 Management of penetrant waste and environmental considerations: biodegradability; oxidation; sources of effluent from penetrant processing; dealing with effluent from penetrant processing; management of waste penetrant chemicals.

Review :
...the author is experienced in this field of penetrant testing. The book contains enough information for planning and using a penetrant testing method to the fullest advantage of this important technique. - Applied Mechanics Review; ..a very interesting and valuable source of information...lots of diagrams, tables, illustrations and photographs which add to the well prepared and presented text...recommended this book to the professional and student alike. - Quality News; Excellent information on the mechanisms of failure, defects and their origins ... Classic diagrams are provided which illustrate the manufacturing processes and metallurgical features. This information is important to give NDT personnel basic metallurgical knowledge which is often lacking concise but thorough guide to the practical application of the penetrant method of NDT. Despite the strong practical emphasis, theoretical background is given to explain why particular procedures are adopted |o Metals and Materials; Thorough Guide...The procedures are explained in a thorough manner, being accompanied by over 50 figures together with tables, also by questions and answers for each chapter...Ecological, economic, health and safety aspects are all addressed. The cost of the book is minute in comparison with the consequential losses of a material losses--|o Energy World |d 11/92u
