About the Book

The aim of this volume is to cover the standard topics of mechanics of materials as well as subject matter of a more advanced and specialized nature. The topics discussed include the analysis and design of structural members subjected to axial loads, torsion and bending, as well as such fundamental concepts as stress, strain, elastic and inelastic behaviour and strain energy. Other topics of general interest are the transformations of stress and strain, stress concentrations, deflections of beams, behaviour of columns and energy methods. More specialized subjects are thermal and prestrain effects, pressure vessels, nonprismatic members, discontinuity functions, shear centre and inelastic bending. The book is designed in such a way that teachers have the opportunity to select the topics that they feel are the most fundamental and relevant. Each section includes a number of problems for homework assignments and discussions.

Table of Contents:
Part 1 Tension, compression and shear: normal stress and strain; stress-strain diagrams; elasticity and plasticity; linear elasticity and Hooke's law; shear stress and strain; allowable stresses and loads. Part 2 Axially loaded members: displacements of axially loaded members; statically indeterminate structures; temperature and prestrain effects; stresses on inclined sections; strain energy; dynamic loading; nonlinear behaviour; fatigue; stress concentrations. Part 3 Torsion: torsion of circular bars; nonuniform torsion; pure shear; relationship between moduli of elasticity E and G; transmission of power by circular shafts; statically indeterminate torsional members; strain energy in pure shear and torsion; thin-walled tubes; stress concentration in torsion; nonlinear torsion of circular bars.
