About the Book

A rejection of the view that "time" has been erased from the philosophical agenda by its deconstruction from Nietzche to Derrida. On the contrary the text argues that deconstruction testifies to its critical importance. The author invokes a double strategy. On the one hand, "moment" can be re-described and re-thought in ways that break with representation, located first in Nietzsche and then in the time-dissolving moves of the later Heidegger and Derrida. On the other hand, deconstruction's refusal of an original, primitive time, coupled with its reading of meta-physics as a form of textual articulation, licences a programme for the analysis of temporal structures and representations of time that abjures foundationalist pretentions and resists spatializing interpretations. No theoretical synthesis of these two strategies is attempted; rather a suggestion that their inner unity must remain for the moment a question is made.

Table of Contents:
Nietzsche's transvaluation of time; Husserl's phenomenology of time the intuitional requirements of Husserl's phenomenology and the requirement of an original(pre-objective) temporality, Husserl's analysis of time-consciousness, Derrida's reading of Husserl; Heidegger's treatment of time and temporality: a critical analysis of being and time introduction, the existential grounding, death, resoluteness and care, time and temporality, from the earlier to the later Heidegger (and Derrida); time beyond deconstruction Derrida's deconstruction of time and its limitations, the question of strategy, time and interpretation, some temporal structures of language - prolegomena to a future theory of time, the philosophy of the future.
