Excerpt from Aeschylos Prometheus Nach der Darstellung dieses Dichters hatte Prometheus den Zorn des Zeus dadurch erregt, dass er denselben bei einem Opfer in Mekone (alter Name für Sicyon) zu täuschen suchte. Er theilte nämlich ein geschlachtetes Rind m der Weise, dass er auf der einen Seite das Fleisch und die Eingeweide, mit dem Bauche des Opfer thiers umhüllt, mit sammt dem Fette in das Fell einwickelte, auf der andern Seite aber die Knochen hinlegte, welche mit vielem Fette umwickelt waren. Zeus wunderte sich über die ungleich mässige Vertheilung des Opferfleisches, da der aus Knochen beste hende Theil weit grosser erschien als der andere. Prometheus aber stellte ihm die Wahl anheim. Wiewohl Zeus die List durchschaute, so nahm er doch für sich den grösseren Theil und als er sah, dass es nur Knochen waren, zürnte er gewaltig. Deshalb behielt er den Lebensunterhalt und das Feuer bei sich. (opp. Et dies v. 42, Da verging sich Prometheus zum zweiten Male, indem er das Feuer, in den Stengel der Narthexstaude 5) verborgen, den Göttern ent wandte und den Menschen verlieh. Deshalb beschloss Zeus den Menschen ein neues Uebel zuzufügen. Er befahl dem Hephästos eine schöne Jungfrau aus Erde und Wasser zu bilden; diese wurde herrlich geschmückt und vom Hermes zu Epimetheus, dem Bruder des Prometheus, gebracht. W iewohl diesem sein Bruder eingeschärft hatte kein Geschenk vom Zeus anzunehmen, sondern es sofcrt zurück zuschicken, so beachtete dieser doch die Warnung nicht und mit der Pandora 6) zugleich erhielt er den Kiste, welche, als sie geöffnet wurde, alle Art von Unheil unter jene Menschen verbreitete, indem nur die Hoffnung in derselben zurückblieb. Prometheus aber wurde vom Zeus zur Strafe an den Kaukasus gefesselt. Dazu flog täglich ein Adler herbei, welcher die Leber desselben abfrass; was der Adler aber am Tage abgefressen hatte, wuchs in der Nacht von Neuem.
