Special care has been bestowed upon the sections referring to the strong and weak declensions and conjugations, to the modal auxiliaries, the infinitives and participles, the subjunctive and indicative moods, and to word-formation and construction. In the Zweite Stufe disconnected sentences are used only here and there for illustrations, while every grammatical principle is elucidated by means of Sprachstiicke. In the Dritte Stufe, Dichterworte or quotations from poets and prose-writers take the place of the sprachsmcke; each quotation presents in its completeness a beautiful, serious, or humorous thought worth remembering. It is believed that the book contains abun dant material to meet the demands of the advanced entrance requirements in German grammar as fixed by the leading colleges.
